Resumen

Las estadísticas de La Federación Internacional de Diabetes refieren que, en el año 2019, había un aproximado de 463 millones de adultos con diabetes mellitus (DM), y la probabilidad de aumentar a 853 millones para el año 2050. Entre las consecuencias de padecerla sin atención, son las complicaciones crónicas graves como el daño al sistema nervioso, la ceguera, la insuficiencia cardíaca y renal, problemas dentales, y los accidentes cerebrovasculares, entre otras. En la actualidad, algunos medicamentos antidiabéticos como la Metformina tienen limitaciones y efectos secundarios, por lo que ha crecido el interés en el uso de agentes naturales para su tratamiento. Un ejemplo a notar es el uso de las plantas del género Costus spp. conocida con los nombres comunes de apagafuego, huilamote o caña brava en diferentes estados de México; el género consta de aproximadamente 175 especies. Se ha demostrado que su consumo, tiene efectos favorables en la reducción del colesterol y de la hemoglobina glicosilada, pero también en el aumento del glucógeno hepático; con efectos comparables a los del fármaco Glibenclamida. Por lo expuesto, el objetivo de este trabajo fue realizar una revisión del avance en el uso potencial de las plantas del género Costus como hipoglucemiante en pacientes diabéticos y su relación con el control de la hiperglucemia para evitar daños oculares, renales y nerviosos.
