Abstract
Key periods in the origin of terrestrial plant biodiversity are discussed within an evolutionary context that reflects the pattern of structural and environmental change over deep time. Current biodiversity is understood as a synthesis of the changes and relationships within the Earth System, where life interacts with the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. The interaction of Earth System components manifests as responses in life forms throughout geological time, documented through the fossil record. Furthermore, the importance of conserving biodiversity and its abiotic environment, from the origin of life on Earth to the present day, is emphasized. This aims to achieve a better understanding of the interrelationship of the Earth System as manifested in current biodiversity.
